Civil Society Organizations awarded US$ 10,000
The Global Forum for Health Research together with the WHO Scientific Resource Group (SRG) on Equity Analysis and Research and the People's Health Movement (PHM) are very pleased to announce the four civil society organizations (CSOs) to be awarded with a grant of US$ 10,000 as the result from the call for research proposal from CSOs.
Expanding Cancer Care and Control in Developing Countries
The Global Forum for Health Research highlights the growing need for cancer care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in a ‘Call to Action’ paper published online in the Lancet (August 16, 2010).
Once considered a disease which primarily affects developing nations, cancer is now a leading cause of death and disability for poorer populations. Almost two-thirds of the 7.6 million cancer deaths in the world occur in LMICs.

| The Global Forum for Health Research reviews and reflects on a landmark event in its report from Forum 2009, ‘Innovating for the Health of All’. Over 900 key stakeholders from over 80 countries convened in Havana, Cuba to discuss research for health and identify priorities and solutions. Ministers of Health, researchers, policy-makers, public health experts, professionals from the private sector, activists and the media from the global health arena shared their experiences of innovation in health settings. “Once again the Global Forum for Health Research demonstrated its unique role in the global health community,” said Professor Anthony Mbewu, Executive Director of the Global Forum for Health Research, in his foreword to the report. Call for Research Proposals From Civil Society Organizations
The Global Forum for Health Research together with the WHO Scientific Resource Group (SRG) on Equity Analysis and Research and the People's Health Movement (PHM) are very pleased to announce that 93 proposals from 53 countries were received from the call for research proposals from civil society organizations (CSOs).
Welcoming the first WHO strategy on research for health
The Global Forum welcomes WHO’s first comprehensive strategy on research for health and looks forward to its implementation. It also welcomes its WHA Resolution 63.2 on WHO’s role and responsibilities in health research.

Experts from Brazil, Thailand and South Africa joined representatives from the EU, the World Health Organization and Global Health Europe to discuss the new EU policy framework on “the EU Role in Global Health”.
Regarding research and evidence, Professor Mbewu pushed for the EU to do more on the social and economic determinants of health and to partner with developing countries on health promotion, social and behavioural research.

2009 Overview
This has been another very productive year for the Global Forum for Health Research. The Combined Approach Matrix (CAM): A priority-setting tool for health research

At the 2002 Barcelona European Council, Heads of State and Government agreed that R&D investment in the European Union (EU) must be increased with the aim of approaching 3% of GDP by 2010, up from 1.9% in 2000. According to the latest available data, included in the forthcoming Monitoring Financial Flows report of the Global Forum for Health Research, EU countries were investing US$ 269.6 bn in R&D (1.9% of GDP). This is US$ 166.2 bn short of the target.
