The Global Forum for Health Research held a symposium during the XVIII World Congress on Safety and Health at Work, on the theme ‘Research priorities for interventions on safety and health at work’. The Congress is the world's largest international event in occupational safety and health and intends to reflect on safety and health at work as a basic human right and as a means for economic growth and development. The Global Forum symposium emphasized the need for more attention to research in this field, and especially those aspects of the research agenda that relate to poor and marginalized people in low- and middle-income countries.
The objective of this symposium, which was held on Monday, 30 June 2008 from 16.00 - 18.30, was to identify priority research areas on safety and health at work, tackling especially unskilled and/or informal work, gender disparities and other biases in relation to safety and health at work – thus aiming at poverty reduction and promotion of social justice.
