Forum 8, the 2004 annual meeting of the Global Forum for Health Research, was composed of different types of sessions and activities. The multiplicity of types of "meeting opportunities" is deliberate and reflects the very nature of the Global Forum: catalytic, flexible, inclusive, bringing together many partners to contribute to all aspects of the discussion, a network of networks.

In addition to the more formal plenaries, debates, panel discussions and structured sessions, Forum 8 offered many opportunities to meet other participants – old colleagues and new friends alike. The Marketplace was one such opportunity, which lasted throughout the meeting.
