Creation of the network
The Global Network for Research in Mental and Neurological Health (GNRMNH) was established at its inaugural meeting in October 2001. It is a result of two major initiatives supported by the Global Forum for Health Research: the International Consortium for Mental Health Policy and Services and the Institute of Medicine study which led to the report “Neurological, Psychiatric and Developmental Disorders: Meeting the Challenge in the Developing World” (2001).
In 2003, the Global Network was registered as a non-profit corporation in the United States.
Objectives and focus
The network’s objectives are to:
* support key research and implementation of needed services for mental and neurological disorders in poor populations;
* reduce the long-term cost of mental and neurological disabilities;
* foster the development and implementation of basic local infrastructure to carry out these tasks.
