10th anniversary messages

On the occasion of its 10th anniversary in 2008, the Global Forum has asked its partners, constituencies and friends for their view on how the Global Forum has helped improve the health of poor populations.

This is what they said:
It is expanding its visions to include new ideas and people. As a disability organization we are thankful to the Global Forum for giving us a space to highlight the issues of disasters and disability. I wish the Global Forum and all those who have worked so hard for what it is today the very best.
I think the Global Forum for Health Research has helped improve the health of poor populations through its network building and series of research project initiated.
It has promoted health research in areas where no funds were available before and has challenged the boundaries between science and policy.
It revealed the poor health conditions of the poor and did research about health poverty and it gathered the research scholars from all over the world and put their ideas in one place and disseminated the findings of that research to the world community.
It has given visibility to some problems of the poor and worked to create a common understanding of what is unacceptable in health in the XXI century. Keep up the good work.
Congratulation to the 10 years anniversary. Your efforts in reality help poor populations improve the health care on the basis of better research and knowledge.
Please, continue helping the LDC and my country ( Mozambique) appreciate your role.
The Global Forum is a very useful think tank that help us to strengthen our Forum in Argentina. I would like to congratulate the Global Forum and wish you the BEST.
You are doing the great work to help the poor people. They will appreciate what you have done!
It has funded many poor scientists in their work but inspite of my repeated application I have not yet received any financial assistance.
Felicidades en sus 10 años de labor.
You do strive very hard every year to bring all stakeholders through your annual fora to address so many pertinent issues, year in, year out. This entails so much organizing and attention to detail so that those qualified to contribute can do so with like-minded people for the betterment of those who are in dire need of health. Congratulations.

It has opened the avenue for young scientist and researchers to contribute to international development.

  • It established strong linkages between academia and health activism.
  • It contributed to making the priority setting for health research more responding to needs.
  • It enhanced the utilization of the research results.
Enabled young and seasoned researchers worldwide to expand our scope and foundations to make robust research work, which brings more than evidence: possibilities for incidence and change! Congratulations!!
Kudos to all the members and the work you all do to educate the world about health.
It has always kept the door open for anyone who wishes to contribute to big issues of humanity, not only on health research but also to such things as global warming/climate change.
The door has been wide open and never shut. The door has been open for anyone. Truly a global forum....
As global health forum is representing whole world, its information is in different languages. If URDU which is being spoken all over south Asia your material should be in Urdu too.
It has created awareness among health researchers about global health needs.
It supported sufficient and valuable projects to promote health level and health research in developing countries and provided good chances for researchers.
It publishes highly researched articles in newsletter.
It helps to know about bodily health.
It provides chances to look into health affairs of others.
It is a good way to take proactive approaches.
It distributes high-level information without any discrimination.
Thanks you so much for the books you send me.
Happy Birthday and many happy returns of the day! Success and further expansion of the Forum! I'm wondering whether I'm a member or not?
The Global Forum, just 10 years old, has made impact in every country of the world. We in the developing countries feel their impact the most. With the '10/90' initiative, the Global Forum has touched uncountable lives! Happy birthday to the Global Forum. Honestly, I am yet to see an organization as dedicated and hardworking as the Global Forum, achieving so much in just 10 years! Kudos! I am happy to be associated with you!
Because of Stephen Matlin's efforts to bring health research to all world regions and to include majority world researchers in the Forum's activities.
Congratulations on completing ten years of effective service in the field of health.
It works towards strengthening the health research infrastructure in developing countries
It helped to give up alcohol & tobacco use, increase in physical activity in form of yoga & exercise, stress management to control blood pressure, obesity, cholesterol levels.
Using "Global Forum" strategies in our hospital in Pune, India, we reversed the serious heart conditions of hundreds of patients and by-passed their by-pass surgery.
The organization always prioritized the health issue of the poor people on different aspects.
Best wish and Happy Birthday.
The information and knowledge from the Global Forum for Health Research will be very useful for my work.
In this complex and confused world of global health, to have a group raising the voice of pursuit of new knowledge to solve problems of today and tomorrow is remarkable and most gratifying. Keep the march forward!
  • It has explained the key reason for weak development of health research systems in world health research
  • It has become the main directory force for health research bodies and researchers for recognizing what we need to do or know to improve the health research system in the country
  • It is the Global Forum health researchers are waiting for its decisions
Global Forum advocates for researchers, their organizations and funders to focus on the need for evidence to inform the tough choices that need to be made to improve health in resource-poor countries.
The Global Forum has worked hard in this decade with the great world investors connecting and most developing countries health managers, specialists, and researchers, producing conscience on global health problems, boarding them with important initiatives, ordering the available methodology, and advancing with new outcomes in their solution.

There is a treasure in documents produced and distributed by the GFHR in the world.

The contact with the GFHR, Louis Currat and Adetokumbo Lucas in 1998 changed my life and my interests in scientific logic and methodological matters. Since then, I studied more economy of development than any other matter. I tried to be part of the first staff of the GFHR Secretariat as health analyst, although, I could do this from outside.

It was a great privileged to participate in three unforgettable forums # 3, 4 & 5 1999-2001 supported by the GFHR. I learnt very much, giving many feedback ideas of unconventional projects, which were not well received due to excess of biomedical technological interests in the investors. This general problem breaking all the global health initiatives including the two rounds of Great Challenges for the Global Health.

I defended in Bangkok the idea to maintain independent the GFHR from other NGOs.

Since 2000 I personally tried to bring to Havana the staff of the GFHR. Years ago, I could not meet personally Stephen Matlin at Havana, because I was not informed of their meeting here. It is quite important for the GFHR to maintain direct non governmental relations with all the researchers and actors involved in global health research in all the countries, not only with the government officials and managers.

Most of the key scientific outcomes on economy of development and global health research achieved in the last 10 years, if applied since 2008 to practice by the developing countries’ governments, private sectors and civil societies, would help to solve the need of improvement of global health equity and levels, with independence that we do not have yet all the biomedical technology that we would like to have, though the world have produced many IT not applied to global health research yet.

Perhaps, the GFHR could revisit all the advances in economy of development research and on global health research, and could bet more investment applying this social knowledge as well as IT in the next decade.

I whish you a new successful decade to the GFHR.
It provides a forum to bring together all sectors and is truly international. Happy Birthday Global Forum!
Your reliable field surveys and adorable papers in many fields, such as: health management, health information, health technology criterion, etc. help policy-makers and researchers.
Congratulation for the excellent work you have done.
I think the Global Forum for Health Research has helped improve the health of poor populations because: you have championed the bringing together of health researchers, funders, development practitioners and carefully spearheaded the formulation of, and guided the focus of health research with action/implementation in mind and pushed for the funding of the process - all for the benefit of the very poor.
The researchers network approach to successful knowledge sharing in dealing with global health.
It gives them opportunities to be heard.
It has been seriously committed to its mission. I applaud its efforts in engaging decision-makers from low- and middle-income countries in strengthening the research for health to correct the '10/90 gap'.
The Global Forum for Health Research has improved the health of poor populations because it has promoted health research on the basis of humanity's needs, thereby reducing global inequities. The current additional emphasis on health systems research and health research communication is vital to ensure that the fruits of research are actually applied for the benefit of the poor. "The application of the knowledge we already possess has greater potential to improve the health of patients than any drug or technology likely to be developed in the next decade." Anne Brice and Muir Gray's statement (Update, March 2003) is especially salient for the 1.3 billion people worldwide who currently lack access to basic health-care services.
It is in fact an active international group which is sharing knowledge and needs from North to South and from rich to poor and vice-versa. Promotion of global health requires interaction between all population levels especially the young generation in a vast world which is now considered a small village.
The Global Forum gets valuable information out that helps policy-makers and managers better organize and deliver appropriate care.
Different, sometimes poles apart, views have come up. Conceptual nuances regarding health have come to the fore.
It has been an important vehicle for bringing together the producers and users of relevant knowledge, all of whom share the goal of reducing health inequities worldwide.
They have contributed immensely to the body of knowledge available on contemporary public health issues/problems of developing countries. The publications, bulletins and conferences are very educative.
It has held a lot of very important fora putting together researchers, politicians and health authorities and managers.
Ten years tenure of Global Forum has established an upward trend in health research. This adolescent Forum has a long way to go; Let us take steps firm and sure.
Their excellent publications provide solid data examining the '10/90 gap', spurring all aspects of health research.
Congratulations on the 10th anniversary of your organization, which has contributed to improving the health of poor populations through enormous efforts at creating awareness, putting public health on the agenda of world leaders, pushing for equitable health care, stimulating thinking about creative solutions, training young talents and through terrific networking activities.
There is expertise covering different areas in health research and a zeal and enthusiasm to move forward together among the Global Forum members.
All the best for the 10th anniversary!
It has helped raise the awareness of the '10/90 gap' among policy-makers at the global level.
They have a successful team working under clear:
- Mission
- Vision
- Values
That is helping poor people to attain the maximum level of health.

With my full respect to your successful efforts.

Dear Friend:

Just to congratulate you and all the research community for this first 10th anniversary of an organization that has proven fundamental having placed research for health on the agenda of so may other institutions. I can only say that I have been honoured for being able to share many relevant moments with you over the last 5 years. Congratulations!

It has highlighted the critical role of research across the whole spectrum from basic to interventional research, and the limited support for research on diseases of relevance or for capacity building in low-income countries. No other organization I know can do this so thoroughly and objectively.
Congratulations - your meetings provide a breadth of fresh air in promoting equitable access to care. Your publications are a rich source for all of us including my students. Very best wishes to you and your staff for bringing such an interdisciplinary group of health researchers, epidemiologists and health policy colleagues together with such consistent enthusiasm!!!
With a boundless mind should one cherish all living things, suffusing love over the entire world, above, below, and all around without limit, so let each cultivate an infinite goodwill towards the whole world.
Congratulations and many many happy returns of the days. Best wishes for the 10th birthday of the Global Forum for Health Research, which has started for the improvement of health of the poor in the global. I am sure this forum will try to fulfill good health for all where women's health is deteriorating the most. May all beings be happy, joyous, and live in safety// Thank you.
In my PhD studies I specialized in knowledge construction in public health. I believe that validity of knowledge is based on the social location of the person or the group. Things that are valid or real for the conditions in Europe or America are not necessary valid for the people in Africa. I think the Global Forum for Health Research is playing an important role in raising awareness on this important issue.
I really get a lot of information from the Global Forum of Health Research! Congratulations and keep it up!!
The Global Forum is providing health researchers in developing countries with (free) valuable documents, studies, data and research suggestions.
The Global Forum for Health Research was/is able to bring scientists and opinion leaders together, focus them on the relevant topics for the future, collect the relevant scientific and applied results and do the best to motivate the decision-makers to apply them.
It has successfully brought to the attention of researchers a major flaw in priorities, the '10/90 gap'. Congratulations for all those wonderful contributions to the field of health research.
Since last year I came into contact with the Global Forum for Health Research on the internet, I had been receiving their publications not as an asset but as a key contribution to me in carrying out many health researches. As a young graduate with no job, money supposed to be of my value but the information I always obtain from the Global Forum for Health Research publications that help me to combat many health-related problems in my country Nigeria. Happy birthday and prosperous years ahead.
It effectively raised the issue of inefficient global health research funding and championed the '10/90 gap'.
Both the research and the promotion of health initiatives related to poor countries helped to establish new ideas and actions against inequalities in these populations.
You are investing your resources in 'global health' by educating policy-makers and by bridging the gap between the developed and developing countries.
Health is the top, the Global Forum for Health Research is working for topper.
It is pleasure of mine, team work of this organization holds all responsibilities and awards & rewards.
It has brought such issues to the front burner of political discussions across continents through increased and improved media coverage.
It highlight and gives the clear picture of those in need and I really appreciate the article of the '10/90 gap', that was the best. Just keep it up.
Networking with other organizations through annual forums has helped poor populations to get research findings and information sharing on how to fill the gaps. The Global Forum for Health Research has been helping to correct the '10/90 gap'. The Global Forum has enabled delegates from poor countries to participate in annual forums.
It has created the space for researchers and civil society to come together in a unique space of interaction where ideas are shared and echoed to the world.
It not only pinpoints health problems through research and global competitions, but also builds action plans to unravel them. Apart from its great impact on global policy and decision-making, this health forum is a place for researchers who dream of a just and healthier world.
It has strengthened and improved research abilities in developing countries
You support more things for poor populations, especially developing countries. Even me, I always receive your books for free. It is necessary for my job on nutrition. I hope that in future it will be continuing.
The Global Forum has made great efforts in improving health research for the poor and has been promoting quality and efficient health care. In particular, the Global Forum has helped to bring policy-makers to accept the research outcomes in innovations targeted at the poor and the weak.
You are diligently engaged with policy-makers and vulnerable people in order to bridge gaps. God bless your work and all your future endeavors.
The Global Forum has continuously made its publications available to researchers, institutions and organizations. This has, on the one hand, contributed immensely to educating and reducing the menace of health-related problems. However, the Global Forum should do more by encouraging young researchers and institutions to attend their programmes through grants or sponsored trainings
Of creating awareness about various health problems and trying to find their solutions through possible interventions.
Of increasing the importance of health research and its dissemination across the globe.
The journal is well informed about the current development and challenges in world health especially in third world countries. Please keep the flame glowing and let there be capacity development in Africa.
The forum is contributing to identifying the issues of health inequalities and trying to make voice with evidence to all global audiences to invest in an equitable manner.
Dear friends and colleagues at the Global Forum,

COHRED has been pleased to work with you over the years as a close partner in health research for development.... and now research for health.

Bangkok, Mexico and now our place as the two nongovernmental organizations sponsoring the Bamako process have all been fruitful collaborations.

We appreciate the platform you provide that has been a focal point for our work with countries, and look forward to continued work with you in the future.

All the best from the COHRED team:

Carel, Sylvia, Michael , Andrew, Teresa, Margo, Jennifer, Sandra, Sandrine, Hassen, Francisco, Mohir, Edlyn, Nadia.
Your documents and knowledge shared is world-wide. I have used lessons read from your books and information from your web site to improve myself and help solve challenging problems in health in Nigeria.

The Global Forum for Health Research has been always consistent. Please keep it up. I am proud to be associated with you. Happy Birthday...
It brings together knowledge and experience in favor of poor populations in an intercontinental dialogue. Congratulations.
First I am glad that I have this opportunity to share this moment with you. I took part in your Cairo meeting and it was the most fruitful event I ever attended. I was looking forward to be with you in China but unfortunately I was not able because of my dad's illness. I am really looking forward to be with you next October. All the best.
Many lives that never had hope of living for next one year have now lived for the another ten years. More strength to you.
You have been promoting research to improve the health of the poor.

Dear Global Forum for Health Research:

Congratulations on your 10th Anniversary. There is no more noble
cause than seeking to improve global health, and there is no better
way to do this than to establish a strong foundation in health
research. The Global Forum for Health Research has been instrumental
in highlighting this basic fact: greater research into health issues
makes for healthier societies. TWAS, the academy of sciences for the
developing world, in Trieste, Italy, congratulates the Forum on its
success and wishes it much continued success in the future.

  • It has managed to bring partners from multiple sectors with common interest in health research which provided opportunity to exchange views from not only health but from other sectors that care about health;
  • It has created the awareness that there is something that is called “health research” which is different from “medical research”.
  • It has been able to move the event form only Geneva to other cities in developing courtiers, which has automatically meant participation from these courtiers in the Forum which would have been impossible if it was kept in Geneva;
  • The staff are (no exception) nice, they are all approachable and cooperative.
They have applied a holistic approach in tackling the problems faced by the poor and I think it is yielding fruit.
The Global Forum for Health Research applies a more holistic approach to tackling the numerous problems faced by the indigenous people of poor countries.
Happy anniversary. 10 years mean a lot.
Congratulations. Keep up the good work. I attended a forum years ago in Geneva but regret not having been able to attend since then. Next time perhaps.
Happy Birthday and thanks for all your work and publications.
It made some basic guidelines to conduct research that will benefit the poor.
It make suggestions on how to link research outcomes for the benefit of the poorer sections of the population.
I am happy that ICDDRB was in touch with you. Because ICDDRB is one of the health-related research partners of the Bangladesh government.
It has helped improve public-private partnerships on programmes aimed at improving people's health, contributed to the capacity building in health research & training and has also worked to improve the quality of biostatistics in health research.
It has sensitized key players in the health and development sector, initiated pro-poor research, built effective networks and influenced pro-poor policies, provided publications and resources towards bridging the 10/90 gap.

Warmest congratulations on the 10 th anniversary of the Global Forum. June 24th in the Philippines is quite important... the feast of St. John the Baptist. So there are areas in the country where people celebrate this by dousing people, cars and passers with cans/buckets of water. Sort of a new and fresh beginning for all.... I do wish the Global Forum the same.... a refreshed and invigorating next 10 years of research for health especially for the poor!

BTW, I appreciated the old picture of the Foundation Council members in 1998... thanks!

Congratulations!!! Many thanks for your contribution to the oral health programmes.

Happy Birthday. Your work towards health programmes is commandable.

Congratulations.

I am excited to know your performance. It is a noble vision.
Dear Global Forum team, Great news! Congratulations on your 10 th Birthday and whishing you many more to come. May each and every passing year bring you more and more wisdom and solidarity, so as to face the challenges on all our endeavors!
Efforts to create awareness in good health and nutrition need to be enhanced. Improvement in standards of medical education in India should be addressed. Commercialization of medical and health facilities needs attention.
Because: the Forum promotes exchange of ideas, encourages researches, and also expands networks of people working to eliminate disease and ill-health among the poor.
Of its networking, transparency in its thought, opportunity to share experiences, identifying the disease burden and developing strategies for its control.
I wish to congratulate for this event of birthday of the Global Forum for Health Research. It is a prestige the forum has been sustainable for 10 years. Kindly, keep it up with the same pace of health research.
The Forum gives an opportunity for usually silent but courageous peoples to experience and influence input to their own health and well-being underpinned by support otherwise unavailable.
The research and advocacy made a major change in the mindset of the policy-makers. Country-specific focus on similar issues would further facilitate the process.
Bringing together experts and other concerned persons to extend global frontiers of public health knowledge through providing, sharing and disseminating research evidence for the benefit of improving health and health services for all populations.
Health consciousness has now reached the grass-roots people. People are now better informed health-wise.
First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your valuable service to humankind. Obviously, the Global Forum for Health Research did a tremendous job to the community. It is delivering very strong messages regarding the health of the poorest sections of the society worldwide. I thank the Global Forum for Health Research.
It is perfectly true that the organization has contributed greatly since it was established especially in promoting health researches which is geared towards the improvement of health conditions of individuals from developing countries. I wish you well in all you are doing; we are proud of you. Bye.
It is an indisputable fact that the Global Forum for Health Research has not only touched the core of developing nations but also improved the health of African inhabitants. Happy anniversary, more power to your elbow.
