Young Voices in Research for Health

The Global Forum engages with young researchers and leaders of tomorrow through the annual essay competition "Young Voices in Research for Health", jointly organized with the well-known scientific journal The Lancet.

What are the objectives?

  1. encourage the next generation of researchers to consider the range and complexity of issues involved in research for health
  2. create an understanding of equity-based and pro-poor research priorities
  3. inspire many to action through provocative, idealistic and passionate ideas
  4. foster a network of young voices who will interact and mutually support one another as they succeed to influential positions
  5. facilitate the networking of young voices with (senior) decision-makers who participate in the Global Forum's Forum meetings

Who can participate?

Young professionals (under 30) working on or interested in the broad spectrum of research for health are invited to submit original, provocative, idealistic and passionate ideas on different themes, taking established practices to task in a constructive fashion. Essays are 1500 words only and in 2009 can be submitted in English, French or Spanish.

What are the themes?

2010: Health systems research: towards universal coverage

2009: Innovating for the health of all

2008: Climate change and health: research challenges for vulnerable populations

2007: Equitable access: research challenges for health in developing countries

2006: Combating disease and promoting health

What are the prizes?

Around 40 outstanding essays are published each year in an anthology and the authors are featured one by one on the Global Forum's media & publications page throughout the year. From these, five or six winners from different geographical regions are invited to the Global Forum's annual forum, with all expenses paid.
