The Commission on Health Research for Development: Enriching the Legacy
In 1990, the Commission on Health Research for Development found that investments in health research were biased towards the needs of developed countries.
The paper – titled ‘Health Research: Essential Link to Equity in Development’ - revealed that health research for low- and middle-income countries was grossly under resourced, and more funding should be dedicated to their needs.
In the following years, the Global Forum for Health Research was formed and the term ‘10/90 Gap’ was coined to capture this major imbalance. It also led to more actors and funders conducting research relevant to the needs of low- and middle income countries.
Experts from the Global Forum joined key figures in global health, as well as original contributors to the 1990 report at the Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston. Participants will review its impact and explore future directions for health research.
Professor Anthony Mbewu, Executive Director of the Global Forum for Health Research, joined a panel to discuss the institutional architecture involved in advancing health research, through public and private partnerships and developing new technologies.
